Does Florida Rain Clean Solar Panels? Why Solar Panel Cleaning Still Matters

No. Florida rain rinses the loose dust off a solar panel and leaves everything else: the pollen film, the salt haze, the algae band, the bird droppings, and a set of mineral spots of its own. In South Florida the humidity that follows every storm cements the fine particles back onto the glass within a day or two, so a rooftop array in Fort Lauderdale or Boca Raton is often dirtier a week after a rain than it was before. Here is why, and what actually gets the glass clean.

What rain does and does not move

Rainwater falling on a tilted panel does one thing well: it carries off particles that are sitting loose on the surface. Fresh dust from a dry week, sand blown up from a neighbor’s construction site, the top layer of pollen that landed yesterday. That is real, and after a heavy storm the panels can look better from the driveway.

What rain does not move is anything that has bonded to the glass. Pollen that has been through a dew cycle. Salt that has crystallized. Algae growing in the wet band along the lower edge of the module. Bird droppings that baked on in one afternoon of sun. Sap. Water rolls over those, and they stay.

Why humidity makes it worse

In a dry climate, rain is at least a wash-and-dry event. In South Florida it is a wash-and-soak event. The air after a storm is saturated, and overnight the glass sweats with dew. That dew wets whatever fine particles are on the panel, pollen especially, and the morning sun dries them into a film. Repeat that for three or four days and the film is bonded. Rain in February through May, our pollen season, does not clean the pollen off; it starts the glue cycle.

The same thing happens with Saharan dust from June through August. The dust arrives as a haze fine enough to sit in the humidity, the humidity binds it to the glass, and each afternoon storm adds a rinse that moves the loose part and leaves the rest.

Rain leaves spots of its own

Rainwater is not pure. It carries dissolved minerals and whatever it collected on the way down, and when a drop dries on hot glass it leaves a ring. On a panel that gets a few dozen rain events a summer, those rings add up to a visible haze. This is the same reason a car looks worse after it dries from a rain shower than it did during it.

Salt does not rinse at all

Near the Intracoastal and the beach, in Lighthouse Point, Coral Ridge, Las Olas Isles, and east Boca, the panels pick up a salt film from the air every day. Rain does not remove salt; the drops are not on the glass long enough to dissolve it, and the humidity afterwards redeposits it. This is why coastal homes are on a quarterly schedule with us and why the water we clean with matters.

What actually cleans the glass

Two things. Pure water, so nothing is left behind when it dries. We use deionized water, which has its dissolved minerals removed, so it lifts the salt and dries spot-free instead of leaving calcium rings the way tap water does. A soft brush, to break the bond on pollen film, algae, and droppings without touching the anti-reflective coating on the glass. No pressure, no detergents. Pressure washing can crack cells and force water past the edge seals, and most panel manufacturers void the warranty if it is used.

So how often, in Florida?

Twice a year for most homes, in May after the pollen tail and in November when hurricane season ends. Quarterly for coastal roofs and roofs with heavy bird activity.
